Text
O Magnum Mysterium is a millennium-old Latin text used in the Catholic church, with origins in nighttime Christmas worship (the Matins). The text has been set to music by many composers since the Renaissance.
O magnum mysterium
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum
jacentem in praesepio.
O beata Virgo, cujus viscera
meruerunt portare
Dominum Jesum Christum.
Alleluia!
O great mystery
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the new-born Lord
lying in a manger.
O blessed is the Virgin, whose womb
was worthy to bear
Christ the Lord.
Alleluia!
