The Carillon and the GCNA
A carillon consists of a series of at least 23 tuned bells played from a keyboard console. Instruments with at least 48 bells are considered “concert” carillons and are suitable for the majority of music written for the instrument. There are more than 600 carillons worldwide, including approximately 180 in North America.
Founded in 1936, The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA) a professional organization dedicated to the promotion of the carillon art in North America.
Competition
Held every two years since 1988, the Franco Competition Contest called for a new original composition for carillon between 5 and 10 minutes in length and playable by a solo carillonneur on a four-octave instrument with 48 bells with a 2-octave pedalboard.
Known Performances
June 9, 2021 – Premiered at the GCNA/World Carillon Federation joint 2021 Congress by Alex Johnson. Mr. Johnson is the 7th University Carillonist of the University of Chicago, and was the First Prize winner of the prestigious international Queen Fabiola Carillon Competition in 2019, an event held every five years at the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen, Belgium.
