First Prize, University of Notre Dame Magnificat Choir Composition Competition 2020
Notre Dame Magnificat Choir
The Notre Dame Magnificat Choir at the University of Notre Dame is comprised of around 40 women who perform a varied repertoire of the highest quality, including Gregorian chant, Renaissance polyphony, and music from the 18th through the 21st century. The choir is responsible for providing music at the Saturday Vigil Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
Competition
The competition called for a new work for two or three-part women’s choir with pipe organ accompaniment, set to the Latin text of Psalm 145:2 (below). It required a piece of 3 to 4 minutes in length that would fit comfortably within the Preparation Rite of the Catholic Mass.
Text
The Latin text of Psalm 145:2 (offertory antiphon for the Third Sunday of Easter in the Catholic liturgy)
